Commanders Corner

Time flies and here we at the end of May showers and preparing for the June Heat.

On the 17th of May, we installed the new officers for 2016-17. All the previous officers have returned for another year of service for your Post with the exception of the Chaplain, this position has been filled by Cheri Knox. Thanks Tom for your service. Cheri is a welcome addition to our officer corps. I don’t know if any comrades watched the Armed Forces Day Torch Light Parade on TV or in person, but VFW 1435 was an entrant. Thanks to the efforts of many Post members. Cheri Knox for getting the registration information in on time. Tink Tinkham for the parade train, Doug Parks for the many hours of labor and finances that he spent preparing the train getting it in parade shape. Also thanks to Darren Hughes for the time spentand labor to make this happen. I was extreemly happy to see our Post represented in the largest military thank you parade west of the Mississippi River. I hope we can continue to get our Post out into the community.

The Memorial day celebration and ceremony at Pines Cemetery was a success and a big thanks to all that participated and came to celebrate on this 150th anniversary of Memorial Day. I hope everyone took just a moment out of thier busy day to reflect on the sacrifices made by our fallen Veterans and thier families to keep our country free. I also hope that you all had a wonderfull Memorial Day weekend.

We also had a Buddy Poppy drive on that weekend that was fairly successfull in raising funds for our Post relief fund.

Always remember “No one does more for Veterans than the VFW” Yours in Comradeship, Don Atkinson, Commander Post 1435

Auxiliary President

Brothers & Sisters:

Another year is coming to an end quickly and we are gearing up for convention in a couple of weeks. We had our Memorial Day Ceremony on May 30 at Pines Cemetery. It was nice to see some of our post and auxiliary members attend. There was a larger crowd than usual, so it was good to see that some people remember what Memorial Day really is about…..remembering our deceased Veterans & Military personnel. Darren read a wonderful article about this from the VFW Post National magazine.

A couple of REMINDERS:

First, this will be our last monthly bulletin for right now. The next one will be quarterly. So please don’t fret when you only get one for July, Aug, & Sept.

Second, in November our bulletin will be going out EMAIL ONLY. If you do not have email, please let me know so we can keep you on the mail list. You will only stay on the mail list if you call me.

Third, Mina asked me let you know that dues reminders will be going out in Aug. I know it’s early to remind you but please keep this in mind and be looking for them.

Lastly, we will not be having an auxiliary meeting in June and July.

I don’t have much else. I hope you have a great summer and “stay cool”!!!

Loyally,

Men’s Prez Say’s”

OK, we are off to a mild Summer, hoping it will get warmer.

We, will be having a carwash and BBQ in the next month or two, so stay tuned for updates.

We are taking the June, July and August off from Breakfasts, but not to worry, the Young Marines and thier Parents will be filling in. So come on daown and support them. I am sure they will do a great job in our time off.

As always, I would like to thank all that support our events and the Post as a whole, without your support, we can’t support our veteran community.

Don E. Osborne, Men’s Auxiliary, President

HONORING POST MEMBER’S

SGT. Paul R. Tesch

SGT. Tesch Was born in Waconia Texas, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Aaron Tesch, here is a brief history from an article that I received from his son (also Paul Tesch). Paul R Tesch was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action on the Fifth Army front in Italy, according to reports, and the Purple Heart for injuries received in said action.

Paul served in the 135th Infantry Regiment of the 34th “Red Bull” Division.

Under direct German observation and heavy

mortar, small arms and rocket fire, SGT. Tesch made his way to a friendly tank and obtained it’s help in knocking out an enemy observation post he had located. All this was accomplished while taking heavy fire.

“The Citation reads”

“Tesch’s courage and initiative enabled the battalion to advance without further casualties and are a credit to himself and his organization”.

We here at Spokane Valley VFW Post 1435 SALUTE you with our deepest respect.

Paul is currently residing at the Veterans home on Fifth in Spokane and would love to visit with members of his Post.

Quartermaster Comments

Summer has hit and it is going to get hot fast, so stay cool and don’t forget the sun screen. We had a great time at the parade and also at the Memorial Day Service, hope you got to attend one or both of these events.

Our membership numbers are as follows: 96.51%, 24 shy of 100%. We need your help with this, so if your dues are past due, well pay them please.

We also need your support at our breakfasts and the monthly Steak and Bake. We have been doing better each month, but I would like to see some of the old faces that I truley miss seeing .

Darren Hughes, Quartermaster (509) 535-9315

SURGEON

If you know of a member or family member of a veteran in need of medical equipment (wheelchair, walker, crutches, etc), or you know of a member that has passed or is in the hospital, please contact our Post Surgeon.

As always, I would like to thank all who have donated equipment, without your donations we would not be able to help our veterans that are in need.

Do to the generosity of our members, I have to decline any further donations, as we are running out of room to store what we already have. If you do have equipment that you need to get rid of call and I will try and find a good home for it.
