Commanders Corner

I Guess summer has arrived. This month has been fairly quiet at our Post, the biggest news was the Department of Washington Convention, held in Pasco Washington from June 22nd too the 26th. This was the first convention that I have had the oppertunity to attend. It is now official, I will be your Post Commander for the ensuing VFW year 2016- 2017. I will lead to the best of my ability this year andtry and ensure your Post grows and prospers in said year. That being said I will to the best of my ability and that of my line officers abilities set our Post up to continue to grow and assist Veterans in our area for many years to come.

I would like to take this oppertunity to give a big heart felt thank you to our Hoopfest team for thier efforts on the black top in downtown Spokane 25-26 June. They did some much better this year than last year. Thank you Matt Van Hook, Darren Hughes, Josh Van Hook and Randy Sullivan, your efforts during this event have brought a shinning light on the Post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars as a whole. The team was covered on KXLY New 4, you can go KXLY.COM to view this story. Matt Did a great interview bring to light the efforts of the VFW in serving our Veterans both localy and on the National level.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July, please stay hydrated and cool. Don’t forget your sun screen if you are going to venture out into the sun.

Always remember “No one does more for Veterans than the VFW”

Yours in Comradeship, Don Atkinson, Commander Post 1435

Auxiliary President

Brothers & Sisters:

Summer is in full swing with this heat (Yuck)! A few of just got back from Convention. What a time that was. There were quite a few males attending this time and it was wonderful. Congratulations to our new Department Auxiliary President Marg Wright (Aux Post 51). I do have one award but I will wait until I see them to present it before I mention the name here.

We don’t have to much happening this summer. No meeting is scheduled for July. School of instruction is in August and we will have a meeting to catch everyone up with the goings on for the year.

Don’t forget to let me know if you NEED to remain on the hard copy mailing list for the bulletin. We go EMAIL in November.

Dues reminders are going out. Please see the special section in this bulletin regarding this. Ihope you all enjoy the Holiday and the rest of July, and I hope to see you

SGT. Paul R. Tesch

SGT. Tesch Was born in Waconia Texas, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Aaron Tesch, here is a brief history from an article that I received from his son (also Paul Tesch). Paul R Tesch was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic achievement in action on the Fifth Army front in Italy, according to reports, and the Purple Heart for injuries received in said action.

Paul served in the 135th Infantry Regiment of the 34th “Red Bull” Division.

Under direct German observation and heavy

mortar, small arms and rocket fire, SGT. Tesch made his way to a friendly tank and obtained it’s help in knocking out an enemy observation post he had located. All this was accomplished while taking heavy fire.

“The Citation reads”

“Tesch’s courage and initiative enabled the battalion to advance without further casualties and are a credit to himself and his organization”.

We here at Spokane Valley VFW Post 1435 SALUTE you with our deepest respect.

Paul is currently residing at the Veterans home on Fifth in Spokane and would love to visit with members of his Post.

Quartermaster Comments

Summer has hit and it got hot fast, so stay cool and don’t forget the sun screen. We had a great time at Hoopfest and got the VFW mission message out. Thanks to all who came out and cheered us on.

Our membership numbers are as follows: 96.51%, 24 shy of 100%. So we will be looking to get our 100% in the next year.

We also need your support at our breakfasts and other events such as lunch and Friday Dinner. We have been doing better each month, but I would like to see some of the old faces that I truley miss seeing .

Darren Hughes, Quartermaster (509) 535-9315

SURGEON

If you know of a member or family member of a veteran in need of medical equipment (wheelchair, walker, crutches, etc), or you know of a member that has passed or is in the hospital, please contact our Post Surgeon.

As always, I would like to thank all who have donated equipment, without your donations we would not be able to help our veterans that are in need.

Do to the generosity of our members, I have to decline any further donations, as we are running out of room to store what we already have. If you do have equipment that you need to get rid of call and I will try and find a good home for it.
